Walter Pall's main blog about bonsai and his work with trees from day to day. Lots of good pictures of good trees and lots of valuable information about bonsai.
Sure, this is the weakest point at the moent. Let gow freely every spring and thicken the branches. -At the same time the lower part of the trunka and the nebari will improve. It is just a matter of time.
From my experience the pedunculate oak (Quercus robur)is highly susceptible to powdery mildew. Is cerris more resistant to it? Yours looks quite healthy. Do you (have to) treat it with fungicides?
By the way, I spray my quercus robur with a mixture of water and a little milk! The leaves look greener and healtier and they dont get mildew or even loose it! Cheers, Boris

Can something be done to improve the lower trunk?

No mildew at all on this tree. No treatment other than spraying with diluted lime sulphur in March.
